About Us

A highlight of Dr. Chien's career was travelling to Ottawa with his family to receive the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in Secondary Mathematics and Sciences from PM Jean Chretien.

During his illustrious teaching career at David Thompson Secondary School, Dr. Chien founded the gifted Math and Science program. His students consistently placed first in BC, Canada, and even North America in most of the major math competitions. Dr. Chien then went on to teach at UBC, sharing his expertise by training future teachers.

Our Math Learning Centre stands out with top instructors that have the highest qualifications and experience, and passion for teaching.

Fun fact: Dr. Chien is not a medical doctor! He has a PhD in Physics, which is what he considers to be mathematics applied to the real world. Dr. Chien taught math and science for over 30 years in the BC public school system, and has received numerous awards of distinction, including the BC Association of Math Teachers Secondary Math Teacher of the Year and a two-time Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished Mathematics Teaching.

Dr Chien's son, Mr. Chien has a Masters degree in Math Education, and has continued the family tradition as an exceptional teacher with over 25 years experience teaching honours math and coaching his students in math competitions at Burnaby South Secondary School.

With Mr. Chien's dedication and coaching, he has also helped his students achieve impressive results in many math competitions over the years. Our Math trophy case is running out of room!
